Interdisciplinary Symposium, July 1-3, 2020, Łódź, Poland

Lab of Dance aims to build an exchange platform covering contemporary research strategies in dance studies, including, among others, emergent artistic research practices, as well as tool-disciplined cognitive science methodologies, both vividly drawing on a variety of theoretical and philosophical contexts. On such ground, together with the invited keynote speakers and participants of the symposium, we plan to discuss the methodological difficulties and challenges of interdisciplinary dance research and the benefits that can be derived from overcoming them. At the same time, we recognize the expansion of dance and related terms to other branches of knowledge, where it appears as the preferred research material, but also a source of functional concepts and metaphors. Thus, we invite researchers, philosophers and practitioners to jointly study the expanding space of the dance laboratory.

The aim of the workshop is to discuss the recent work on mechanistic explanation, with special stress on particular problems of integration of multiple mechanistic models, robustness, and unification of partial explanations, theories and fields.

There is a growing consensus that cognitive science and cognitive neuroscience explain their phenomena of interest mechanistically. Cognitive science is an interdisciplinary research field, in which methods, tools, and concepts from other disciplines are used. One can ask a fundamental question whether anything unifies the field; or whether it is not just a hodgepodge of heterogeneous research. This kind of doubt can be articulated with regard to any interdisciplinary research field. However, the existence of interdisciplinary collaboration means that there are real connections between disciplines and that their problems are related. But to really dispel the doubt against interdisciplinary research, one needs to answer the question of what makes such conglomerates as cognitive science actually unified.

William Bechtel (California, San Diego)

Serdecznie zapraszamy na drugie spotkanie Kawiarni Filozoficznej w Łodzi. Odbędzie się ono 24 marca 2015 r. o godz. 18.00 w kawiarni “Niebostan”, ul. Piotrkowska 17. Spotkanie poprowadzą dr Paweł Grabarczyk (UŁ, OBF) i dr Tomasz Sieczkowski (UŁ).

Zainicjowana w okresie nowożytnym rewolucja myślenia przyniosła natychmiastowe pragmatyczne rezultaty i w dużej mierze zagospodarowała wszystkie te funkcje.
